This talk will give a high-level and historical overview on the wonders of light including 100 years of Nobel Prizes in physics related to light and photonics, and 50 years of R and D on lasers and photonics technologies and systems. We will also look at some of Bell Labs’ early contributions in photonics innovations including new lasers, ultrafast and nonlinear optics research, as well as advanced lightwave technologies for global optical fiber telecommunications. The impact of the ubiquitous Internet (enabled by the global high-speed optical fiber networks) on the emerging broadband multimedia information societies in the 21st century will be discussed. We shall also speculate what may lie beyond for photonics in the future.
