Cold electrons that move in a plane and are subject to a perpendicular magnetic field show a surprisingly rich and complicated behaviour. A prominent feature is a fractal hierarchy of incompressible quantum liquids with quantized conductance and particles with a fraction of an electron charge. My aim is to give an accessible introduction to the field from a new perspective.
