Master Thesis: THE LEVITRON

The Levitron (R) is a toy consisting of a spinning-top magnet levitating over a permanent-
magnet base. This seemingly violates Earnshaw’s theorem which forbids levitation using
permanent magnets, even if their orientations are fixed. In this work, the Levitron is studied
both experimentally and theoretically including numerical simulations. A demonstration
of the toy as well as a setup to measure the spin frequency of the top is included in
the presentation. The agreement between theory and experiment is satisfactory but not
perfect.
