An independent way to study the properties of cosmic dust in the ISM is to observe the metals in the gas-phase through absorption-line spectroscopy. In fact, large fraction of the refractory metals are missing from the gas-phase, because they are incorporated in dust grains. This phenomenon is called dust depletion, and we can use these observations to characterize the metal enrichment, dust-to-metal ratio, and elemental abundances in dust in the ISM in very different environments, from the Milky Way to low-metallicity distant galaxies.
