Astronomy Seminar: Overview of exoplanet detection and planet formation theory

I will briefly introduce the observation of exoplanets and current understanding of planet formation theory. More than 4000 exoplanets have been discovered so far, and most of them are detected by radial velocity and transit methods. These exoplanets can be classified into three populations, hot Jupiters, cold Jupiters and Super-Earths. Studying the formation and evolution of these planets is a popular research topic. Planet formation includes the growth of four characteristic sizes of bodies, dust grain, pebble, planetesimal and planet. How these bodies grow their masses and what is the major challenging in each stage will also be covered in this talk.
